About This App

Instructions for Use

Thank you for downloading the CMC Field Guide App. This app has been specially designed for rescue professionals, and gives the user access to CMC's Rope Rescue Field Guide and Confined Space Entry and Rescue Field Guide, along with a platform for creating a quick field reference for the user's own notes and images.

Waiver of Liability

The first time this application is opened on a device, the user is prompted with a Waiver of Liability from CMC Rescue, Inc. Once the user agrees and accepts, the app’s Main Menu becomes accessible. This legal information is always available by clicking on About > About this App > Legal Information.

Main Menu

When the App is opened, the Main Menu becomes accessible. Here, the user can browse through content, including the Rope Rescue Field Guide, Confined Space Entry and Rescue Field Guide, user's manuals for CMC equipment, and links to equipment categories on www.cmcpro.com.

Tab Menu

The icons at the bottom of the screen are part of the Tab Menu and represent the Main Menu, References, Notes, and Search. The Tab Menu is accessible from most sections of the app. On pages where it is not displayed, the user can press the "back" button in the upper left corner of the interface to access the Tab Menu.

Content

By browsing through the Main Menu, content including Field Guides and Product Manuals are available. The Content Interface provides the user with a means of reading through single or multiple page content sections. The user can see how many pages of content exist within any section using the Page Indicator Bar at the bottom of the screen. Each page is indicated by a small grey circle. The user can scroll through this content by swiping horizontally across the device's screen. To zoom in on content, the user can perform a Long Press" anywhere on the page. When the page is zoomed in, the user can pan around the page by swiping horizontally and/or vertically across the device screen. To zoom out, the user can again perform a "Long Press" anywhere on the screen.

Icons in the lower toolbar allow the user to add Notes, Attachments, and to place the specific content into the References cache. Methods of performing these tasks are descibed in the following sections below.

Reference

The Field Guide App allows the user to create a unique quick reference guide to materials from the Main Menu section of the app, as well as photos and other images from the user's device storage.

The Reference Interface

Selecting the Reference icon takes the user to the References interface. Here, the user can browse through CMC Field Guide content that has been added to the Reference section, as well as photos that have been attached or added from the user's device library. The user may sort the items in Reference by type.

Adding Content to Reference

To add specific content to the Reference section, simply browse through the Main Menu. When viewing specific content you would like quick access to, select the Reference icon and the content will be automatically added to the Reference section.

Adding Photos to Reference

There are two ways to add a photo or video to the Reference section:

1. Browse through the app content from the Main Menu. When viewing specific content that you would like to append with your own photo, touch the Add icon , and select Add Attachment. You may choose to add a photo from your device’s libraries or capture a photo directly by using the camera interface. Once you have added this attachment, it becomes attached to the specific content you are viewing — indicated by a red number on the Attachments icon — and accessible by pressing on the Attachments icon when viewing this content in the future. It is also accessible directly from the References interface.

2. From the References interface, click on Add button in the top right corner of the screen. You may choose to add a photo from your device’s libraries or capture a photo directly by using the camera interface. Once you have added this content, it is accessible from the References interface.

Notes

Notes allow the user to enter personalized, real-time text notes into the app. All notes are time and date stamped, as well as geolocation stamped for later reference. Each Note has its own update log.

The Notes Interface

Selecting the Notes icon from the Tab Menu directs you to the Notes interface. Here, the user can browse through the Notes already added into Notes. Using the menu near the top of the screen, the user may browse Notes by time and date, by specific content attachment, or by Note title (in alphabetical order).

Adding Notes

Similar to Attachments (Photos and Videos), Notes may be added to the application in two ways:

1. Browse through the app content from the Main Menu. When viewing specific content you would like to append with your own text, touch the Add icon , and select Add Note. This creates a new Note and takes the user to the Note interface. Once you have added a note, it is attached to the specific content you are viewing — indicated by a red number appearing on the Notes icon — and accessible by pressing the Notes icon when viewing this content in the future. It is also accessible directly from the Notes interface.

2. From the Notes interface, touch the New Note button in the upper right corner of the screen. This creates a new Note and takes the user to the Note interface. Once you have added a Note, it is accessible from the Notes interface.

The Note Interface

When inside the Note interface, the user can press anywhere on the notepad to type a new note or edit an existing note. Touching the Note title allows the user to type a title for the note. If a title is not entered into this field, the first 20 characters of the user’s note is used as the title. When finished typing or editing a note, click Save in the upper right corner of the interface. When editing, or reading a note, the user can select the Geolocation icon in the bottom right corner of the interface to show the GPS coordinates or map location of where the user was when the note was first entered.

Updating Notes

When browsing Notes, the user can make updates to any Note by selecting it and adding text or making changes to the Note. Touching the time/date stamp at the bottom of the screen displays the note's Update Log with a record for each time the note was updated. Each update record is also accompanied with GPS coordinates of the user’s location when the update was made. (Wifi or Cell service is required for GPS functions.)

Search

To Search keywords, select the Search icon in the Tab Menu. Enter keyword(s) into the field provided; results are presented in real-time as you type. This is an excellent way for the user to quickly access content not stored in the Reference section.

Backups

Depending on your device and device settings, your data, including notes, references and attachments, may be backed up automatically to your Google/Gmail account.

Updates

Occasionally, CMC provides professional rescuers with an application update that includes new content, edits, or features. The user may download the newest version of the app with confidence that their customized app data will remain on their device.

Company History

In the rugged front country of Santa Barbara, California, veteran climber and search and rescue team member Jim Frank realized that with limited access to rescue equipment, many rescuers were still using climbing gear on missions. With lives on the line, Frank endeavored to make rescue safer and more efficient by founding California Mountain Company (later CMC Rescue, now CMC). Established in 1978, CMC began as a company that sourced and supplied specialized life safety equipment to the rescue community.

In 1982, as the market and technology began to evolve, Frank saw an opportunity to tap his background in engineering and established CMC’s manufacturing division, with the intention to design better equipment. Always adhering to rigorous design standards, exacting specifications and quality inspections, Frank and his team of engineers began to design and craft the CMC hardware, harnesses, straps, packs and belts that rescue and work at height professionals have come to trust for four decades.

Today, we are a globally recognized, employee-owned company that innovates life safety equipment with wide applications in rescue, rope access and other at-height scenarios. We proudly manufacture most of our products in the USA, with many of our goods assembled in our ISO-certified Santa Barbara facility.

Professional Training

Our Rescue School is a vital link between CMC and the rescue community. While providing practical, real-world training to rescuers all over the world, we also get to learn from those we teach. Questions arise and are answered, new ideas are sparked, and tried-and-true techniques are reconsidered and refined. For more information about our CMC Rescue School, please visit cmcpro.com
