WE LOVE THE MPD BECAUSE…

Last Sunday night we had a guy trying to free climb a rock face and he couldn’t make it, so on his way back down he slipped about 20 feet from the ground and landed breaking both legs. We were able to locate a decent trail with a fairly flat walk out, and then a moderate slope the last 200 feet up to the road. We used the litter wheel and had a 3:1 haul with the MPD anchored to our SUV. All went well.

“The MPD has become an irreplaceable piece of equipment for us at Abseilon USA. It has so many uses it has quickly become a part of our ‘Innovation Toolbox’. Let’s face it, the right tool for the right job is a priority for us, especially in high-profile work projects like the Kennedy Space Center or The Skywalk at the Grand Canyon. The MPD allows us to eliminate many conventional pieces of equipment in rope access, replacing them with an all-in-one state-of-the-art device.  We were thrilled when CMC introduced the MPD, and  it’s a must-have for any Rope Access Technician’s toolbox.”

“The MPD has made our rope rescue equipment caches complete. It’s ease of use and versatility have allowed us to switch from a lowering to a raising system on the fly just by adding a pulley, carabiner and a prusik hitch to the main line. All the members of my department at Pharr Fire Rescue have been trained in the use of the MPD and have received it with great enthusiasm. I have also introduced it to our local fire academies and neighboring fire departments and they too have enjoyed the MPD.”

– Robert Hernandez, Pharr (Texas) Fire Rescue

“My name is Eric Thompson and I am Operations Manager and technical trainer for the Emergency Equine Response Unit (EERU) located in the Kansas City area.  I am a rope rescue technician and have been adapting human rope rescue/rigging techniques to large animal rescue situations since 2004.  We teach our classes all over the Country to Fire Departments and first responders that may encounter large animal emergencies.  Recently NFPA 1670 published Chapter 17 “Technical Animal Rescue” guidelines, so we are teaching more classes than in previous years coast to coast. About 2 years ago we started using MPD’s in our responses because we needed a quick and controlled way to move our large A-frame on one MPD, and a quick transition raising and lowering system for the horse or animal in the sling.  MPD’s fit the bill perfectly, and could handle the weight!”

“I am a Rescue Technician, Firefighter and EMT, and an active member of my Rescue Team for the past 2 1/2 years. Rescue Resources Inc of Minnesota, is based out of Bloomington. The company does Medical/Rescue Stand-by for Confined Space, Aerial, and Trench work being performed. This February we were all introduced to the beauty and efficiency of the MPD. It was highly spoke of and anticipated by the team. The MPD eliminated both costly time setting up for a rescue and the need for other equipment. The MPD also didn’t wear on the rope. I was totally amazed how quick it was to set up and engage into a Z-Rig. It also produced a confidence in operating when releasing line and braking so much that I also decided to follow CMC on Facebook. Personally I would love to add this to my own equipment, so I can put this item into practice.”

– Roxane Altmeyer, FF/EMT

“Why do I like the MPD? Because the MPD truly lives up to its name. I love the many applications for the MPD. At work we have both the MPD and the Petzl id. We recently compared the 2. I personally liked the MPD because I felt that it offered more and that the functionality of it was a lot smoother. We did some training recently with the MPD and the AZTEK, which I am also in love with also. In closing, I basically like the versatility of the MPD. I believe that it is one tool that every department should have.”

– Ethan Tucker

“My name is Joe Stodola. I am a Josephine County SAR Rope Team member. We used the MPD for the first time five years ago, and we immediately purchased two for our team’s mirrored-system technique. The difference between using a standard lower-raise system utilizing a brakebar and switching from lowering to raising is slow and requires much more training and practice due to its technicalities. When using MPDs, the task is quick, flawless, and requires less training hours to perfect. MPDs are lightweight when compared to the hardware required in a standard lower-raise system. They are built tough with great design and engineering. We have shown the simplicity of operation to some of the other counties with whom we train, and once you see one in operation you must procure one.”

The CMC Multi-Purpose Device (MPD)

The MPD is UL Classified as a pulley, descent control device and belay device.

The MPD allows you to go from lowering to raising without changing hardware. More than nine years of research and development went into the patented Multi-Purpose Device (MPD), which features major innovations in advanced technical hardware for rope rescue professionals. The MPD’s high-efficiency pulley, with an integral rope-grab mechanism, allows it to be used as a lowering device on the main line and belay line systems and be quickly changed over to a raising system without switching out or replacing hardware. The combination of essential features into a single device simplifies on-scene rigging, expediting the rescue. The revolutionary MPD increases user safety with:

  • Reduced Weight
  • Fewer Components
  • Faster Rigging
  • Quick Changeovers
  • Simplified Training
  • Lower Risk
